Cardiff Ki Aikido

Practices

At Cardiff Ki Aikido, we practise Ki breathing, meditation, Ki testing and weapons techniques to improve our balance, relaxation, coordination and confidence.

Techniques

Each class begins with tests of posture and relaxation. Adult classes also include slow deep breathing exercises.

Ki Breathing

With new friends, techniques emulate relationship challenges and their harmonious resolution.

Meditation

We learn the strength in relaxation, whilst many techniques include squatting, lunging or kneeling for stronger legs.

Ki Testing

Improved balance, dexterity and coordination comes from repeating techniques with each side of the body.

Weapons

Constant concentration is needed to perform techniques in a flowing harmonious way with a partner.

Perceive Without Judgement

To progress in Aikido, and thereby be healthier and more successful in daily life,

you need to mindfully include your body in everything you do.

Mind and body are not separate.

“You don’t have to do anything to bring them together”.

“Training is about getting out of your own way, and stop causing separation”

“The mind is a fundamental part of the body and they both continuously share information with each other”*

We practice/train to think without pre-conceptions, to perceive without judgement.

Stress management

Instruction in how to coordinate mind and body to stayed relaxed and calm in daily life. Principles are taught that simultaneously relax the body into an alert balanced condition, and calm the mind in a way that helps it focus.

Relaxation techniques

Teaching of a deep breathing method that boosts vitality, and a meditation method that concentrates then expands the mind.

Children's aikido lessons

Aikido lessons are given to a class of children aged 10 to 13 years old. These lessons emphasize non-competitive cooperation between two children to perform a technique where they take it in turns to hold or break free of a hold.

Dynamic massage

A method of rolling on a mat is taught that is very beneficial for the back and typically releases tension in the joints.

Passive massage

Kiatsu massage can be given to students to release knotted muscles or relax deeper tissue. It is similar to Shiatsu but is more subtle in the application of a much lighter pressure with a single finger or thumb.

Lessons in the use of Boken (sword) and Jo(staff)

Katas (a strict sequence of cuts and thrusts) are taught with Boken and Jo so that the student may safely learn how to perform a controlled attack or defence with either.

Living by Ki principles in every day activities

Guidance on eating, sleeping and performing actions in a way that strengthens your will, confidence, balance and coordination. This includes the principle of non-dissension to achieve positive outcomes in relationships.
